Jazz Concert

Sunday, April 22, 2018, 2:30 AM - 4:30 AM

Under the direction of Mr. John Thomas, join us at the Nathan H. Wilson Center for the Arts for toe-tapping musical selections that will please jazz enthusiasts and those that are not that jazzy. John Thomas began his musical career as a military musician. He entered the United States Air Force Band program in 1978, after completing his Master of Music degree from the University of Southern Mississippi. His first assignment was as Principal Saxophonist with the NORAD Band in Colorado Springs (a joint service American/Canadian band). In 1982, he became a member of the United States Air Force Academy "Falconaires” Jazz Ensemble, also in Colorado Springs. In 1987, he had the honor of winning a position with The United States Air Force Band in Washington D.C. During his 11 years with The United States Air Force Band, Mr. Thomas held Co-Principal and Principal Alto Saxophone positions with The Concert Band. In 1998, Mr. Thomas relocated to Florida with his family and has been active here as a woodwind and jazz performer, teacher, clinician and adjudicator. Saxophone students from his Gainesville private studio were selected for Florida All-State Bands 26 times between 1999 and 2007. In 2007, he became the Director of Jazz Studies and Professor of Instrumental Music at FSCJ.
